Auburn Journal - August 7, 2009Mid-life crisis musical is one for the agedBy Megan Sanders, Journal CorrespondentForgetfulness, doctor's appointments, and reading glasses are all a part of mid-life, but are not usually regarded as humorous. "Mid-Life! The 'Crisis' Musical" puts a comical spin on the things that come with aging. Though the musical isn't one-sided, since it covers both men's and women's issues from mammograms to proctology exams and even subject matters like forgetfulness and class reunions. The musical features a cast of 10 and is directed by Brenda Lindley, the Placer Community Theater president. "It is a series of sketches of the things we go through as we get older," Lindley said. Seven of the 10 actors are local and the other three live in Sacramento. The piano player, Richanne Baldridge, is also a local resident. Lindley said that she had tried to get the rights to the musical for a year, because she felt that this musical was perfect for her theater group as well as the community. She said with the sense of humor that their regular audience has, she knows they will like it. Philip Jacques, one of the actors in the musical said many of the actors play multiple parts. Jacques said you will see familiar characters throughout the show and the characters are based on situations that hit home with many people. "It's a relevant show to about everybody I know," Jacques said. Jacques said that he always wanted to be on stage and this gives him a chance. "I like being on stage," Jacques said. Tim Hardester is another one of the four male actors in the musical. This is his first time performing with the group and he is also the youngest. He said he started out in church musicals, choir and talent shows and then got into drama and theater. "I get such a thrill from being up there," Hardester said. One of Chris Cay Stewart's characters is a woman whose biological clock is ticking. Stewart has been performing for many years and is an experienced performer. "It's cool that some of the cast members are new and some of them are veteran performers," Stewart said. Stewart said they have been rehearsing since April, and Lindley pointed out that they only rehearse a couple nights a week since they all work. "Rehearsals have been fun," Hardester said. Sally Gardner is a divorcee in a 30 year reunion scene. She said that in the scene she tells everyone that she is a divorcee and how she got to be a divorcee. Gardner said she hopes for a full house and for everybody to leave wanting to see it again. "I think that the word of mouth will be good," Lindley added. She also said she thinks everyone can relate to it. "I think everyone is going to love it," Lindley said. Megan Sanders can be reached at or comment at auburnjournal.com Mid-Life!
